“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” Proverbs 24:3-4
When we bought our first home I was so thrilled to make it ours and create a space we would build memories, relationships, see growth, and find peace— even when the hard days come or the messes take over, you know your home is still that same peaceful place.
The first step to creating the space to serve your family and others is first taking a step back and envision the environment you want in your home.
Create a place of peace.
A gathering place for family & friends.
A cozy nook for snuggles and play.
A tranquil place for prayer and reflection.
An environment of love and joy.
There will be plenty of moments where the home feels the opposite of those things, but the foundation you created will always be there.
In a world cluttered with possessions and distractions, the minimalist lifestyle offers a refreshing antidote—a way to declutter our physical space and simplify our lives. Contrary to popular belief, achieving a minimalist home doesn’t have to break the bank. Personally, I find having a more minimalist home allows for more peace in my days because it contributes to organization, cleaning routine, self expectations, stress levels, and just not being overwhelmed just by walking around your home. Your home should be a haven you can find peace in, not a place that brings you anxiety. With some creativity and intentionality, you can transform your living space into a simple serene space without draining your wallet. I’m all for that simple budget, so I wanted to share with you all some of the ways I approach minimalism in my home that are budget friendly.
1. Declutter Mindfully
The first step towards a minimalist home is decluttering. Take stock of your belongings and ruthlessly edit out the items that no longer serve a purpose or bring you joy. That could be clothes you haven’t worn in months, toys your kids never play with, furniture that takes up space and collects dust, or an overwhelming amount of decor that takes over your home. I set up three piles: donate, throw away, sell (because why not make a little extra money on things you don’t use anymore). I do a purge twice a year on clothes and bring them either to consignment shops or just to the thrift store. I go through toys and furniture 2-3 times a year as well. As you go through room by room and declutter your space you want to make sure that the things you keep serve a purpose and bring your joy. Donate or sell anything that doesn’t make the cut. Not only will decluttering free up space in your home, but it will also provide a sense of clarity and lightness.
2. Opt for Multi-Functional Furniture
I’m all about maximizing my space by having multipurpose furniture. When we moved into our home and renovated a lot of it, I made sure that there would be no wasted space (because wasted space collects stuff and clutter). When furnishing your home on a budget, prioritize multi-functional pieces that serve more than one purpose. Look for storage ottomans that double as seating, a sofa bed for guests, or a dining table with built-in storage. These versatile pieces not only save space but also eliminate the need for excess furniture, keeping your home clutter-free and functional. I personally love Ikea for all its simple and practical furniture, I shop bargain stores and thrift stores for deals. Instead of just buying to buy, I wait and watch for good deals.
3. Embrace Simple Decor
I tell people all the time minimalist decor doesn’t have to be boring, it can still be beautiful and colorful if that’s your jam. While minimalist decor is characterized by clean lines, neutral colors, and uncluttered spaces, you can put your own spin on it. Opt for simple yet elegant furnishings and decor items that enhance the aesthetic of your home without overwhelming it. Incorporate natural materials like wood and linen for a warm and inviting ambiance. Thrift stores, garage sales, and online marketplaces are great places to find budget-friendly decor pieces that align with your minimalist aesthetic. My goal is for my home to be a place that is peaceful and easy for my family and guests to relax in, having too much decor can be overwhelming and cause unnecessary stress.
4. Practice Intentional Consumption
In a consumer-driven society, it’s easy to succumb to the temptation of buying more than we need. I’m guilty of that in my life for sure, between influencers who tell you what they think is the latest and greatest and just having shopping legit at your finger tips on your phone. I focus on embracing mindful consumption by adopting a “one in, one out” rule—whenever you bring something new into your home, remove an existing item to maintain balance. Prioritize quality over quantity and invest in items that are durable, functional, and bring genuine value to your life. By being intentional about what you bring into your home, you’ll prevent clutter from accumulating and save money in the long run. Trust me, it makes a huge difference!
5. DIY and Upcycle
I love reusing or DIYing things in my home. Making my own textiles or seasonal decor is one of my favorite ways to save money. Tap into your creative side and explore DIY projects and upcycling techniques to personalize your space on a budget. Repurpose old furniture with a fresh coat of paint, create your own artwork using inexpensive materials, or upcycle household items into unique decor pieces. Not only are DIY projects cost-effective, but they also add a personal touch to your home and reduce waste. Seasonal decor is one way many people waste a lot of money, but re-purposing items on your own or DIYing your own seasonal decor is so easy and can save you a lot of money in the long run.
Simplify and Thrive
Look, so many of you probably thing being a minimalist means you can’t have a beautiful home or enjoy the things in your home. Embracing minimalism isn’t about depriving yourself or sacrificing comfort—it’s about prioritizing what truly matters and creating a home that reflects your values and aspirations. By decluttering mindfully, opting for multi-functional furniture, embracing simple decor, practicing intentional consumption, and getting creative with DIY projects, you can achieve a minimalist home that fosters tranquility, clarity, and contentment—all without breaking the bank. So, roll up your sleeves, declutter with intention, and embark on a journey towards a simpler, more meaningful way of simple living.
