Embracing a simple life in a crazy world

In a world where hustle culture prevails and the constant buzz of technology fills the air, the concept of living a simple life can feel like a distant dream. Despite the noise and chaos surrounding us, embracing simplicity from a biblical perspective offers timeless wisdom and profound guidance for navigating life’s complexities. It’s not about withdrawing from the world or denying its complexities, but rather, it’s about finding balance, clarity, and meaning in the midst of it all as we steward the life God has given us.

So, what does it truly mean to live a simple life in a crazy world?

Surrendering to God’s Provision

At the heart of living simply is the recognizing God’s provision and sovereignty in everything. Just as Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount, we are reminded to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, trusting that all our needs will be provided for (Matthew 6:33). In the book of Ecclesiastes we are reminded that there is nothing new under the sun and everything is vanity, but it also reminds us to enjoy the life we are given (Ecclesiastes 9) By surrendering our anxieties and desires to God, we find freedom from the pursuit of material wealth and worldly success, instead placing our trust in His faithful provision brings peace and purpose.

Finding Peace in God’s Sovereignty

From finding peace in God’s sovereignty and provision, everything else stems from that. Simplicity often aligns with minimalism. It’s about decluttering not just our physical spaces but also our minds and schedules. In a society that often equates success with accumulation, embracing minimalism can be revolutionary. By focusing on what truly matters, setting boundaries in relationships, and letting go of excess, we create space for peace, contentment, and freedom. The apostle Paul wrote, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11). This profound statement speaks to the essence of living simply in the midst of life’s ups and downs. Regardless of our circumstances, whether in abundance or in need, we can find contentment in knowing that our true worth and fulfillment come from our relationship with Christ, not from external possessions or achievements.

Cultivating Mindfulness in Daily Life

Living simply also involves cultivating mindfulness in our daily lives. This habit isn’t one that happens overnight, it takes time to grow mindful of our space and those around us and how we live out our days. As a Christian, I believe that we are also called to be mindful. Mindfulness applies to many areas of life and as stewards of this life for God’s glory, we are called to exercise wise and responsible stewardship over the resources entrusted to us. This includes not only our material possessions but also our time, talents, and relationships. By embracing simplicity and avoiding excess, we can live more sustainably and generously, using our resources to bless others for His glory. By being good stewards it also us to be mindful which allows us to be fully present in each moment, savoring the simple joys, and appreciating the beauty in the ordinary. In a world that constantly pulls our attention in a million different directions, mindfulness becomes a powerful tool for grounding ourselves in God’s Truths and finding clarity amidst the chaos.

Prioritizing Relationships and Connection

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to prioritize productivity over human connection. Yet, living a simple life reminds us of the importance of nurturing meaningful relationships. Whether it’s spending quality time with loved ones, fostering community bonds, or simply being there for one another, genuine connection lies at the heart of a fulfilling life. Nothing can replace a deep conversation with a friend where you walk away feeling challenged, inspired, and fulfilled. “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

Embracing Slowness in a Fast-Paced World

In a culture that glorifies busyness, embracing slowness can feel like a radical act of rebellion. Yet, it’s in slowing down that we truly get to savor life’s moments and appreciate its richness. Whether it’s taking a leisurely walk in God’s beautiful creation, reading a book, enjoying a home-cooked meal, or simply pausing to breathe, slowing down allows us to recharge, reconnect, and find peace in the midst of chaos.

Simplifying Our Goals and Ambitions

Living simply also involves reevaluating our goals and ambitions. Why do you do what you do? What are you passionate about? What does Jesus call us to do and how to live? Instead of chasing after external markers of success, we focus on what God created us to be and how to live. Focusing on what brings God Glory will bring us fulfillment and purpose in life. It’s about aligning our actions with the authority of scripture, serving Christ, pursuing meaningful endeavors, and finding joy in the life He has given us. As Ecclesiastes 9:9 says, “Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.” God already has everything under control, so go live life without worry or fear. With that in mind, I find that my goals and ambitions align with what God has planned for my life.

Embracing the Beauty of Simplicity

In a world that often equates success with accumulation and busyness, the biblical call to live simply offers a refreshing alternative—a life grounded in trust, contentment, and purposeful stewardship. By surrendering to God’s provision, finding contentment in all circumstances, resting in His presence, and stewarding His resources wisely, we discover the beauty and richness of a life lived in alignment with God’s plan.

Ultimately, living simply from a biblical perspective is not about deprivation or withdrawal from the world but rather about embracing God’s provision and aligning our lives in accordance with the authority of scripture. In doing so, we bear witness to His transformative power and become agents of His love and grace in a world longing for true simplicity and fulfillment.

So whether you’re trying to live more simply at home, with less stuff, less toxins, simple clean foods, and simple routines, or if you’re working on cultivating simple habits. Maybe you’re trying to simplify your friends circle and set boundaries and cut out those who are toxic and a waste of your energy. Perhaps you are tired of all the noise of the propaganda machine and you want to live outside of the system and embrace the simple elements of slow days. I believe that true simple living comes from first surrendering our hearts to Christ and allowing God to be sovereign. Life will ALWAYS be far from perfect and life will ALWAYS have hardships and challenges, but why navigate those alone when there’s an almighty God to carry you through it all?

Here’s to living a simple life in this crazy world my friends!

To God be the Glory.
